Christian Community of Latrikunda - School

After many trials and tribulations we have signed a long term lease to a property in the midst of our community. The lease became effective on 1st January 2010. Since signing the lease we have had to demolish the building on the site which were in a very bad state and unsuitable for a school. It was also necessary to obtain connections of water and electricity onto the site.

We have now completed the first two stages of the school construction, four classrooms, and a further room to accommodate an area for teachers to rest away from the children and this is also used for administration purposes. The second stage being completed by the NTP Groep from Holland, and this group will finance and build the remained of the school ie 4 further classrooms and a climbing structure for the children to use at playtime.

In a sense it was a real family project since Joseph, the site foreman, was educated by CCLK, being one of the first students to receive a scholarship grant. He worked hard and was keen on the construction industry. He received his certificate from the Gambia High School in the last few years. Now he is repaying our faith in him totally by organising the building of the school in a way that he can be justifiably proud.

We are taking in fee paying students for the families who can afford to pay a modest fee for the education of their children. These fees will help with the finance of the school. In the long term the school will be self-financing with a mix of free and fee paying students.

The education centre is just the start of a ten year plan during which time we plan to use the Scholarship scheme, in existence since 1998, to promote a Junior School at first, and then to be followed by a Secondary school bringing education within the reach of all students in our community.

Our advisors, comprising experts in development, education, finance and management are there to see that our objectives are fulfilled for the benefit of the community.

AND THERE'S MORE .....

We have also been approached by the local district council to set up and maintain a Christian Cemetry in our area. We are at present one of a team who help maintain another Christian Cemetry and so we have experience in this work. If final agreement is reached with the council they will cede some land that they have designated for this site to CCLK. This site is at least three times the size of the land acquired for the Education Centre and we will be given permission to use the rest of the site as we wish as long as it is for the benefit of the community e.g. Medical Centre, Parish Church, Community Centre, etc.

This could be exciting times for CCLK as long as we can raise the necessary finance!

Please will you help us
